Lady Hardinge medical college located in New Delhi is the premier medical college in India for women. When the national capital was relocated from Calcutta to Delhi in the early 20th century, it was thought that a separate medical college for women would be essential in the context of the extreme backwardness and conservative nature of the Indian society.

Large initiatives towards this cause were taken by Lady Hardinge, the wife of the then viceroy Charles Hardinge. She collected funds from the rulers of the princely states and also the public, inspiringly working towards her dream of establishing a medical college for women.

The college which came into being in the year 1914 was originally named Queen Mary college, but an unfortunate turn of events which saw Lady Hardinge’s death on the same year as that of the inauguration of the college, prompted its renaming as Lady Hardinge Medical College as a tribute to its founder.

Having started off with strength of 17 students for its 7-year undergraduate program in medicine affiliated to the Punjab University, the college has made rapid strides and the intake has now gone up to 200 for the same program ( the course duration has been brought down to just 5 and a half years now). Affiliation to the Punjab University was moved to the University of Delhi in the year 1950 and shortly after that the college started its post graduate courses also in the year 1954. Initially entry was restricted to only female aspirants, but after 1970 men have also been allowed to join LHMC for postgraduate programs.

LHMC is a part of the elite pool of colleges which is managed by the ministry of Health and family welfare of the central government. It has produced over 6000 graduates and 2500 post graduates since its inception. Many of its alumni presently occupy coveted position in various institutes and organizations like Dr. Sumeddha Khanna working with WHO and Dr. Saroj Pachauri with the ford foundation.Lady Hardinge Medical College has come a long way from its humble beginnings and has fortified its place as a top medical college in the country. But its real victory has been the fact that it has managed to uphold and adhere to the values that it always stood for.
